The Beginning

I tripped up the last step of Psychic Haven, gasping for air as my hands and knees smacked cement. My heart thudded against my chest and my thighs burned with exhaustion. The sweat soaking my clothes had only little to do with the five-minute mile I busted out.

The night wind lifted my hair, sending a brief chill to my neck.

“Shit,” I breathed. It’s okay, they’ll never look for you here. This was my only reassurance as I dragged myself up by the door handle and leaned against the brick wall. I gave the door three steady, loud knocks.

“We’re closed. Call to make an appointment!” Rang out a firm, upbeat voice I recognized instantly.

“Cecile, help!” I shouted between gasps of air. I was met with a brief silence before the doorknob rattled. I looked up to see Cecile’s concerned face appear behind the glass. Her hair was pinned beneath an indigo doo rag, a few ringlets of chestnut hair peeking out.

“I thought you’d be back. Come in, I’ll pour us some scotch.” She slid open the screen behind the door.

“I need water,” I moaned.

“That’s not all you need hon.” She let me in, draping one heavily braceleted arm around my waist. She led me to her living room, seating me on a leather couch surrounded by a comedic amount of…
