Monday Wake Up Call
A glorious morning memory
My eyes shot open as an alarm blared from out of nowhere. The 5:00 AM sunrise made an appearance on my bedroom carpet.
“Shit, get up!” I shrieked as I jolted my boyfriend awake.
“What time is it?” he asked, also seeing the light of dawn.
I wrestled out of bed and traced the source of the disturbance. On the floor, my iPhone was vibrating with the ungodly noise. The words “find my iPhone” were printed neatly in the center of the screen.”
Odd. I grabbed it and aggressively thumbed the screen until the noise magically stopped.
From there, I discovered a text message from my mother. Mystery solved.
Send that boy home before your father gets up!
“Okay, my dad is getting up soon, better hurry.” I said, repeating the morning herald to Greg.
“Got it!” he was several steps ahead of me, tugging his shirt over his mussed-up hair.
“You sleep well?” I asked, looking out the window. All the lights in the main house remained off. I breathed a prayer of thanks.
“Yeah. You?”
“Very well. It doesn’t look like anyone’s stirring yet.”
No sooner had I spoken than a light switched on in the house across from us. A silhouette moved with a purpose about the room.
“Oh shit, hurry!” I felt my voice increase several octaves just shy of Catharine Ohara. Why must people choose jobs that make them rise at dawn?
“What’s going on?”
“Quick! The lights are on!” My voice increased to the octave of Catherine Ohara.
A minute later, my boyfriend was clothed and out the door. I stood on the back porch and waved as he started the engine.
Just as the lights to the downstairs kitchen came on, the car had rolled down the driveway. My palpitations quickly subsided.
Once I had greeted the morning with a real sense of gratitude, I was ready to do my meditation. I even had my mantra picked out.
Sitting cross-legged on the grass, I breathed, “in with peace, out with the fucks.” The morning sun comforted me like a blanket as I relaxed.
Everyone together now.
Keep repeating until absolutely no worries arise.
