Out of This World Part 6
A deadly invitation
Lauren woke up the next morning fully rested and exactly where she expected to be. Her pajamas lay clean and neatly folded on the edge of her bed.
A wise decision not to destroy my garments Lauren smiled. This act of obedience both pleased and unnerved her. Since when did Ezra take orders from a pithy human? Things were strange. The strange thing being that nothing was. Lauren knew exactly where she was and why she was there. There was no foggy memory or question of what happened the previous night. She could remember every last humiliating detail. Had she woken up in her old flat in New Jersey, she would have sworn the last few days were a dream.
A white songbird sat twittering on her window ledge, breaking her even further from sleep. How she hated birds. With a groan, she rolled out of bed and trudged towards it. The bird fluttered away, still whistling its frantic song. She changed out of Ezra’s nightgown and into the sundress Zorin bought her. She went downstairs and prayed the men in black weren’t down there. She only heard two voices in the kitchen. Zorin and Ezra.
“Water also works to put out fires,” said Ezra.
“Well, why didn’t you tell us?”
“It was too late. It was also very funny,” hearing Ezra’s laughter reminded her even more of last night.
